In English Grammar, nouns are considered a part of speech and are referred to as the name of a person, animal, place, thing, feeling, or idea. They can also be commonly called “Naming words”. There are 10 different types of nouns namely-  Proper noun, Common noun, Singular noun, Plural noun, Concrete noun, Collective noun, Compound noun, Abstract noun, Countable noun, and Uncountable noun. Nouns are used as the subject, object, and complement in components of sentences. Even nouns perform different functions such as they act as an adjective, also they act as a verb. Some of examples of nouns are-

  • Dora is the cutest kitten ever (Proper Noun)
  • I want to be an Engineer. (Common Noun)
  • He has one brother. (Singular Noun)
  • This highway connects two cities. (Plural Noun)
  • The apple was halved by James and me. (Concrete Noun)
  • A basket of fruit. (Collective Noun)
  • Give all my silk saree for dry cleaning. (Compound Noun)
  • I admire your enthusiasm for life. (Abstract Noun)
  • An apple a day keeps the doctor away. (Countable Noun)
  • Listening to music will make you feel relaxed. (Uncountable Noun)

Types of Nouns and Examples

As we know Noun is the name of a person, place, animal, thing, or feeling. In English Grammar, there are 10 types of 10, namely, Proper Noun, Common Noun, Singular Noun, Plural Noun, Concrete Noun, Collective Noun, Compound Noun, Abstract Noun, Countable Noun, and Uncountable Noun. 1. Proper Noun The noun is the name of a particular person or place. That is used to specify a particular person, place, animal, thing, etc. A proper noun always begins with a capital letter. Sita is a girl.

2.  Common Noun This is a noun that refers to a generic item, group, or place. This means that, unlike proper nouns, they are not used to identify specific people, places, or objects. Common nouns are not capitalized unless they appear at the beginning of a sentence. Sita is a girl.

Hari is a boy.

Kolkata is a city.

India is a country.

3.  Singular Noun Noun which refers to a single person, place, animal, or thing The pet is sitting on my bed

There is one pencil on my desk.

I have one brother.

Ram is riding a bicycle. 

4. Plural Noun Noun refers to more than one person, place, animal, or thing. Plural nouns are represented by -ies, -s, -es, or -ves I have three cars.

Daisy has three sisters and one brother.

Horses are running on the ground.

Cute puppies are out. 

5. Concrete Noun The noun that is perceived by sense Whale, Soap, London, House, Shower, Lemon, etc. 
6. Collective Noun The noun refers to groups of people or things A fleet (collection of ships or vessels), An army(collection of soldiers), A crowd( a collection of people), etc.
7. Compound Noun Such Noun is made up of two or more words. Dry-cleaning, toothpaste, ice cream, etc.
8. Abstract Noun An abstract noun that refers to ideas, qualities, thoughts, feelings, and conditions, and means things that cannot be touched or seen. Goodness, kindness, whiteness, darkness, hardness, brightness, honesty, wisdom, bravery, Laughter, theft, movement, judgment, hatred, childhood, boyhood, etc.
9.  Countable Noun Noun which can be counted. Book, pen, apple, boy, sister, doctor, horse, etc.
10. Uncountable Noun Noun which is not in mass and is uncounted. Milk, oil, sugar, gold, honesty, etc.
