RRB ALP Preparation Tips 2026: Complete Strategy to Crack CBT 1, CBT 2 & CBAT

RRB ALP Preparation Tips 2026

The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) has released the detailed advertisement for CEN No. 01/2026 with 11,127 Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) vacancies, so interested candidates must not waste time and start with the preparation. This is one of India’s most competitive railway exams, with over 30 lakh applicants each cycle. To be different, you have to get ready early and systematically.

The ALP post is a Group C gazetted post under Indian Railways with job security, a fixed pay scale (pay level 2: Rs. 19,900-63,200) and regular promotions. Knowing what you are competing for keeps motivation up throughout preparation.

Why it’s important to prepare early? There are 11,127 seats and millions of applicants, hence only the toppers from each RRB zone are selected. A difference of 2-3 marks can make the difference between clearing the cut-off. Your biggest strength is being prepared ahead of time.

Understand the Complete Exam Pattern

The RRB ALP exam consists of 5 stages. Each stage is qualifying; you have to get through each to get to the next. To break this down, read further:

CBT 1 Exam Pattern

  • 75 questions | 75 marks | 60 minutes
  • Subjects- Mathematics, General Science and Mental Ability
  • Negative marking: −1/3 per wrong answer
  • Qualifying: 40% (UR/EWS), 30% (OBC/SC), 25% (ST)
  • Merit-based shortlisting for CBT 2

CBT 2 Exam Pattern

  • Part A: 100 questions | 90 minutes
  • Part B: 75 Trade questions | 60 minutes
  • Part A: Math, Reasoning, Basic Science & Engineering
  • Part B: Relevant Trade/ITI questions (qualifying)
  • Negative marking: −1/3 per wrong answer
  • Qualifying: 40% (UR/EWS), 30% (OBC/SC), 25% (ST)

CBAT Exam Pattern

  • Computer-Based Aptitude Test
  • Tests spatial reasoning, attention, memory, and hand-eye coordination
  • Minimum T-Score: 42 (required to qualify)
  • Marks not added to the final merit
  • Only the CBT 2 shortlisted candidates appear

Change from Earlier Cycles:

  • No General Awareness & Current Affairs section in CBT 1
  • CBT 1 marks are NOT added to the final merit list. Your final rank is based on CBT 2 Part A marks only (after qualifying CBAT). This means CBT 2 preparation deserves at least 60% of your total effort.
