GDS Merit List 2026 Tie-Breaking Rules

If two candidates have the same Class 10 marks, India Post uses the following priority order to break the tie:

  • Older candidate gets preference (by date of birth)
  • If still tied: ST Female → SC Female → OBC Female → EWS Female → UR Female
  • Then: ST Male → SC Male → OBC Male → EWS Male → UR Male

Why Is the GDS 2nd Merit List Important?

The 2nd Merit List is important for thousands of aspirants who missed selection in the first round.
Here is why it matters:

  •  Fills vacancies left after the 1st merit list document verification process.
  •  Candidates with slightly lower Class 10 marks now get a second chance at selection.
  • The cut-off in the 2nd list is typically slightly lower than in the 1st list.
  • India Post may release a 3rd Merit List as well if vacancies remain after the 2nd list.
  • Selection is 100% merit-based — no exam or interview is required, making every mark count.

Details to be checked in the India Post GDS 2nd Merit List 2026

The 2nd Merit List PDF will include the following details for each circle:
  • Division and Office Name
  • Post ID, Post Name, and Post Community
  • Registration Number
  • Candidate’s Name
  • Percentage of Marks (up to 4 decimal places)
  • Gender and Community Category
  • Date of Document Verification (DV) and Venue
  • Documents to be Verified

Expected Cut-Off for GDS 2nd Merit List 2026

The 2nd Merit List cut-off released by India Post is usually lower than the 1st merit list, mainly because some vacancies remain unfilled after the first round of document verification (DV). Candidates with marks just below the 1st merit list cut-off have a good chance of being selected in the 2nd list. The exact cut-off will only be confirmed once the official merit list PDF is released.

Factors that influence the cut-off are:

  • Total number of applicants per circle and category
  • Number of vacancies left unfilled after the 1st list DV
  • Category-wise reservation norms (UR / SC / ST / OBC / EWS)
  • Average Class 10th scores in a particular state or circle
  • Number of candidates who did not report for DV in the 1st list

What After GDS 2nd Merit List 2026?

1. Document Verification (DV)– Candidates whose names appear in the merit list will have to participate in the Document Verification (DV) process conducted by India Post. Candidates shortlisted in the 2nd merit list will be required to appear for document verification at the designated divisional office, where they must produce original documents along with self-attested copies.

2. 3rd Merit List (if needed)- Additional merit lists (3rd, etc.) may be released if vacancies remain after the second round. Candidates who were not shortlisted in earlier lists still have a chance to be selected in subsequent merit lists.

3. Final Appointment- Candidates who clear document verification are issued appointment letters.

What If Your Name is NOT in GDS 2nd Merit List 2026?

Missing the 2nd merit list is not the end of the recruitment. India Post generally releases multiple rounds of merit lists for the same recruitment cycle if vacancies remain unfilled. This happens when shortlisted candidates fail the Document Verification, withdraw, or do not reach the respective centre for DV. Unchanged: Missing the 2nd merit list is not the end of the recruitment. India Post generally releases multiple rounds of merit lists for the same recruitment cycle if vacancies remain unfilled. This happens when shortlisted candidates fail the Document Verification, withdraw, or do not reach the respective centre for DV.
