The wait is finally over! as the Department of Posts, Government of India, has officially released the 1st India Post GDS Merit List 2026 on 6th March 2026 at the official GDS Online Engagement Portal, https://indiapost.gov.in/gdsonlineengagement. The result has been uploaded as circle-wise merit list PDFs for all 23 postal circles across India, notifying 28558 candidates shortlisted for the DV round.

Candidates who find their registration number in the circle-wise GDS merit list PDF have been shortlisted to appear for the Document Verification (DV) round, which is the last stage before the final appointment. Through this recruitment, India Post recruits 10th pass candidates for 28636 Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS), Branch Postmaster (BPM), and Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) posts under the Online Engagement Schedule-I, January 2026.

Candidates must download the GDS Merit List PDF for the specific circle they applied for and use their 7-digit registration number to check their selection status. Step-by-Step Guide to Download GDS Result & Merit List PDFs

• Open your browser and visit the official India Post GDS portal at https://indiapost.gov.in/gdsonlineengagement.
• On the homepage, navigate to the “Candidate’s Corner” section on the left side of the page.
• Scroll down to the “Online Engagement” section within Candidate’s Corner.
• Click on the link that reads “List of Shortlisted Candidates”.
• A list of all postal circles appears. Click on the circle/state for which you submitted your application.
• The merit list PDF for your selected circle opens on your screen. The file may be large.
• Press Ctrl + F (Find) and type your 7-digit Registration Number to locate your entry quickly without scrolling through the entire document.
• If your registration number appears in the list, note the DV date, venue, and documents required mentioned against your name.

What after India Post GDS Merit List 2026?

The candidates whose names are listed in the GDS Result 2026 PDF, which has been released circle-wise, must participate in the document verification round to secure a final appointment to the positions of Gramin Dak Sevak in their respective circles. Those who have been shortlisted should have their documents verified by the Divisional Head indicated next to their names. The candidates have to carry the following documents for DV.

1. 10th/SSC/SSLC Original Marks Memo of the candidates
2. Caste or Community Certificate (For candidates from the reserved category)
3. 60 days of computer knowledge, Trained Certificate From a recognised institute
4. Physically Handicapped Certificate (If Applicable)

What to Do If Your Name Appears in the GDS Merit List 2026?

If you find your registration number in the circle-wise merit list PDF, here is a clear action plan to ensure your selection is not jeopardised:

1. Note DV details immediately — Check the date, time, and venue for Document Verification printed against your name in the merit list.
2. Arrange original documents — Gather all required original certificates well in advance (list given below).
3. Prepare self-attested photocopies — Keep at least two sets of self-attested photocopies of every document.
4. Report to the venue on time — Arrive at the designated Divisional Head’s office before the scheduled DV time. Late arrivals may not be entertained.
5. Do not delay formalities — Once the provisional engagement letter is issued, you have 30 days to complete all pre-joining formalities.

What If Your Name is NOT in GDS 1st Merit List 2026?

Missing the first merit list is not the end of the recruitment. India Post generally releases multiple rounds of merit lists for the same recruitment cycle if vacancies remain unfilled. This happens when shortlisted candidates fail the Document Verification, withdraw, or do not reach the respective centre for DV.

Based on previous GDS recruitment cycles, as many as 4 to 5 merit lists were released in a single cycle. Candidates who did not make the 1st list are advised to keep checking the official portal regularly for updates on the 2nd Merit List 2026.

GDS Merit List 2026 Tie-Breaking Rules

If two candidates have the exact same Class 10 marks, India Post uses the following priority order to break the tie:

• Older candidate gets preference (by date of birth)
• If still tied: ST Female → SC Female → OBC Female → EWS Female → UR Female
• Then: ST Male → SC Male → OBC Male → EWS Male → UR Male
