JEE Main 2025 Tie Breaker Rules
JEE Main aspirants often wonder, “What happens if two candidates score identical marks in JEE Mains?” In this situation, ranking is decided through a tie-breaking method. In JEE Mains, if two or more students score the same make, tie-breaking rules decide who ranks higher. These Tie-breakers Rules help to determine who should get a higher rank, which is important for admission to top engineering colleges. This process is necessary because the number of seats in colleges is limited, and students with the same score might otherwise end up with the same rank.
NTA Changes to JEE Main Tie-Breaker Rules
The newly issued guidelines regarding the JEE Main Tie Breaker rules by NTA reveal that age criteria and application number in ascending order will be no longer considered as the tie-breaking rules. Earlier, JEE Main Tie Breaker Rule 8 stated “the older candidate will be given preference” and Rule 9 stated that “the application number in ascending order will determine the ranking”. In the latest information bulletin for JEE Main 2025 by NTA, the rank will be determined solely on the candidate’s exam performance, and if the tie still remains, the same rank will be given to those candidates.
Tie Breaking Rules For JEE Mains
This order ensures that candidates are ranked by both their scores and accuracy [how many correct vs. incorrect answers they have]. Below we have discussed a few tie-breaking rules of the Joint Entrance Examination [JEE] Mains 2025.
- Rule 1: The candidates with the higher scores in Mathematics will be ranked higher.
- Rule 2: The candidates with the higher scores in physics will be ranked higher
- Rule 3: If there’s still a tie, the candidates with the higher scores in Chemistry will be considered first.
- Rule 4: If the tie still exists, the candidates with a lower ratio of incorrect answers to correct answers across all subjects [Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry] will be ranked higher. This means they made fewer mistakes compared to correct answers.
- Rule 5: If the tie still continues, candidates with a lower ratio of incorrect to correct answers specifically in Mathematics will be ranked higher. Then same for Physics, and at the end same for the Chemistry subject.
- Rule 6: The final rule is if the tie still cannot be broken after all these steps, the candidates will be given the same rank.
