The Himachal Pradesh government is all set to introduce the curriculum of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) board at a total of 100 senior secondary government schools across the state. The officials, while announcing this move, have announced that this change to the curriculum will be applicable from the upcoming academic session, i.e., 2026-27. Also, they mentioned that this is being done to provide students with a wider exposure to the academic curriculum and prepare them to face and win over the national wide competition.
What’s the Plan?
The move will be carried out in phases. In the first stage, 100 schools will come under the CBSE board, and the plan is to eventually have at least one CBSE-affiliated government school in every assembly constituency of the state.
Why the Change?
Officials believe that introducing CBSE in government schools will:
- Give students better exposure to a curriculum that is widely recognized across India.
- Help them prepare more effectively for competitive exams and higher studies.
- Encourage healthy competition between schools under the state board and those under CBSE, which could push up the overall quality of education.
What About Teachers?
The state has assured that teachers and principals won’t be left behind in this transition. A separate cadre will be created for CBSE schools, and staff will be chosen on the basis of merit and overall performance. Teachers can also look forward to incentives, improved infrastructure, and more opportunities to engage in activities like mentoring, career counselling, arts, and sports.
What It Means for Students
For students, the shift could open new doors. Since CBSE is a nationally accepted curriculum, it may make it easier for them to compete in national-level exams and seek admission to colleges across the country. The government hopes this step will also reduce gaps in educational opportunities between different regions of Himachal Pradesh.
