Medical education in India is a highly sought-after field, with millions of students aspiring to become doctors. The Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery [MBBS] degree is the primary qualification required to practice as a medical doctor. As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the number of MBBS seats have been increased by 10% from 51,348 to 1,08,940. This increase will help students to take admission to 532 medical and 313 dental colleges in India. The National Eligibility Entrance Test – Undergraduate (NEET-UG) is the largest national-level entrance exam in India conducted for admission to the MBBS course in government and private medical colleges.
Distribution of Government MBBS Seats in India
India has a vast network of government medical colleges, which are spread across the country to ensure regional diversity and accessibility. These colleges are affiliated with state universities or are autonomous institutions under the purview of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. NEET offers over 100,000 MBBS seats, 27,868 BDS seats, 52,720 AYUSH seats, and 603 BVSc and AH seats.

As of 2024, there are approximately 386 government medical colleges in India, offering over 55,880 MBBS seats annually. The distribution of these seats varies significantly from state to state. States like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Karnataka have a higher number of medical colleges and thus a larger share of government MBBS seats.

Government MBBS Seats in India – Reservation Policy
India’s reservation policy plays a significant role in the allocation of government MBBS seats. A certain percentage of seats are reserved for various categories to ensure inclusivity and equal opportunities for all sections of society. The major reservation categories include:
- Scheduled Castes [SC]: 15%
- Scheduled Tribes [ST]: 7.5%
- Other Backward Classes [OBC]: 27%
- Economically Weaker Sections [EWS]: 10%
- Persons with Disabilities [PwD]: 5% within each category.
Additionally, some states have their own reservation policies based on regional demographics and social structure.
