Candidates willing to apply for RRB ALP 2026 must ensure they meet the required educational qualification and age limit criteria as specified by the Railway Recruitment Board. Check details below.

Educational Qualification

Candidates must satisfy one of the following:

  1. Matriculation / SSLC + ITI (NCVT/SCVT) in trades: Armature & Coil Winder, Electrician, Electronics Mechanic, Fitter, Heat Engine, Instrument Mechanic, Machinist, Mechanic Diesel, Mechanic Motor Vehicle, Millwright Maintenance Mechanic, Mechanic Radio & TV, Refrigeration & AC Mechanic, Tractor Mechanic, Turner, Wireman
  2. Matriculation / SSLC + Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in the trades above
  3. Three-year Diploma in Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics / Automobile
  4. Engineering from a recognised institution

Age Limit (as on 01 July 2026)

  • Minimum- 18 years
  • Maximum- 30 years

Upper Age Relaxation

  1. SC/ST- 5 years
  2. OBC (NCL)- 3 years

RRB ALP 2026 Selection Process

The selection of candidates will be based on a multi-stage process as per the RRB ALP CEN 01/2026 guidelines. Railway Zone and RRB-wise vacancies are released along with the notification. Candidates can choose only one RRB.

The RRB ALP 2026 exam pattern has been updated with key changes in the 2026 notification. The selection process consists of 3 computer-based stages — CBT 1, CBT 2, and CBAT — along with Document Verification and Medical Examination.

The RRB ALP Exam Pattern 2026 has been changed. CBT 1 now has 75 questions (General Awareness removed). Questions are from Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, and General Science. CBT 1 is a screening exam only — marks are not counted in the final merit list.

CBT 2 is conducted in online mode with a total duration of 2 hours 30 minutes. It has two parts — Part A (written, merit-based) and Part B (trade-specific, qualifying only).

A major change in RRB ALP CEN 01/2026 is the revised merit weightage: CBT-2 Part A carries 50% weightage and CBAT carries 50% weightage for final merit preparation. In the previous 2025 recruitment, the weightage was 70% (CBT-2) and 30% (CBAT).

RRB ALP CBT 1 consists of 75 MCQ questions to be completed in 60 minutes. Questions are from Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, and General Science. There is a negative marking of 1/3rd mark for each wrong answer. The minimum qualifying marks are 40% for UR/EWS, 30% for OBC/SC, and 25% for ST.

An Assistant Loco Pilot works under the supervision of a Loco Pilot (train driver) and works for the safe and efficient operation of trains. ALP is responsible for watching and calling out signals, monitoring locomotive instruments such as speedometers and pressure gauges, assisting in brake testing before departure, and preparing the engine by checking oil, fuel, and water levels.
