What is UGC NET Exam 2026?
The UGC NET is conducted by the NTA on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The examination determines the eligibility of Indian nationals for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and appointment as Assistant Professor, appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to Ph.D., and admission to Ph.D. only in Indian universities and colleges.

UGC NET December 2026 Exam Date Out
The UGC NET December 2026 exam is scheduled to be conducted from 14 to 19 December 2026. The examination will be conducted in CBT mode for 87 subjects. The exact centre, date, and shift allotted to an individual candidate will be mentioned on the admit card. The NTA has not yet announced the exam city intimation date or admit card release date.
Who Can Apply Online for UGC NET December 2026
Candidates who fulfil the prescribed educational qualification and other conditions are eligible to apply for UGC NET exam. The eligibility requirements differ slightly depending on whether the candidate is applying based on a postgraduate qualification or a four-year bachelor’s degree.
Educational Qualification
Candidates with a Master’s degree or equivalent examination from a recognised university/institution are eligible subject to the prescribed percentage requirements.
Candidates belonging to General/Unreserved/General-EWS categories generally need at least 55% marks in their Master’s degree, while candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC-NCL, PwD/PwBD and Third Gender categories are eligible with 50% marks.
Candidates should check the detailed Information Bulletin for the list of recognised postgraduate courses and other eligibility provisions.
Candidates With Four-Year Bachelor’s Degree
Candidates who have completed a four-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree with at least 75% marks or an equivalent grade can also appear for UGC NET, subject to the conditions specified in the bulletin.
A relaxation of 5% marks is available for eligible reserved and specified categories.
However, candidates qualifying for NET on the basis of a four-year bachelor’s degree are not eligible for appointment as Assistant Professor. They can be considered for JRF and Ph.D. admission as per the applicable rules.
Age Limit (as on 1/12/2026)
The age requirement depends on the category of eligibility being claimed.
For Junior Research Fellowship: The maximum age for JRF is 30 years.
A relaxation of up to 5 years is available to women candidates and candidates belonging to OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD and Third Gender categories, subject to the prescribed conditions.
Certain other relaxations are also available for candidates with research experience, LLM qualification and armed forces service as specified by NTA.
For Assistant Professor and Ph.D.: There is no upper age limit for applying for UGC NET for Assistant Professor and Admission to Ph.D.
UGC NET December 2026 Application Form
The UGC NET December 2026 application form has been made available online from 08 October 2026. Candidates can submit the form only through the official UGC NET website. Applications submitted through any other mode will not be accepted.
The last date to complete the application process is 28 October 2026 up to 11:50 PM. Candidates should not wait until the final day, as completing the form involves registration, entering details, uploading the required information and payment of the examination fee.

UGC NET Late Fee
