Every year, the Institute of Banking and Personnel Selection (IBPS) conducts the IBPS SO exam to recruit candidates for Specialist Officer (SO) vacancies in Public Sector Banks. The exam dates are released in the start of the year, providing candidates sufficient time to prepare. The first and foremost step of preparation is understanding the latest syllabus and exam pattern along with marking scheme and duration. 

IBPS SO Syllabus and Exam Pattern 2026

The IBPS SO 2026 syllabus covers three main areas in Prelims: Reasoning, English Language, and Quantitative Aptitude (or General Awareness for Law/Rajbhasha posts). The Mains exam tests Professional Knowledge specific to each post — IT, Law, Agriculture, HR, or Marketing. The exam is conducted in three stages: Prelims, Mains, and Interview. There is a negative marking of ¼ mark per wrong answer in both stages.

IBPS SO 2026 Selection Process

The selection of candidates for IBPS Specialist Officer posts is based on performance across three stages. Candidates who clear all stages will be recruited to Specialist Officer posts in participating Public Sector Banks.

1. Preliminary Exam-Qualifying round only — score not counted in final merit
2. Mains Exam- Professional Knowledge — score counted in final merit
3. Interview- Final stage — combined with Mains for selection

Ans.- No. The IBPS SO Preliminary Exam score is NOT counted in the final merit list. It is only a qualifying stage. Final selection is based on Mains Exam score and Interview performance only.

IBPS SO 2026 Exam will be conducted in the following three phases: Preliminary Exam, Mains Exam, and Interview Process. Every applicant must clear all levels of examination to get selected to the post of Specialist Officer in multiple Public Sector Banks participating in IBPS SO 2026.

Candidates who qualify for the Mains Exam are called for the Interview Process conducted by IBPS. The final selection is based on the combined performance in the Mains Exam and Interview. The interview assesses candidates' subject knowledge, communication skills, and suitability for banking roles.

• The final merit list is based on Mains score + Interview score combined.
• Document verification is conducted during or after the interview process.
