According to Article 164, the Chief Minister is appointed by the Governor and according to Article 167, CM serves as a liaison between the Governor and the state council of ministers. Our constitution makes no specific mention of the educational qualifications to nominate a Chief Minister (CM), however, this does not mean that the governor is free to appoint anyone as the state's or UT's Chief Minister.

Latest Updates of the year 2026:
- Chandrasekaran Joseph Vijay from the TVK party became the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 10 May 2026.
- As of May 9, 2026, Suvendu Adhikari has been appointed as Chief Minister of West Bengal. He is the first CM from the BJP in West Bengal.
- Samrat Choudhary from the BJP was appointed as the new CM of Bihar.
- Rekha Gupta as the new CM of Delhi.
