RRB Group D Normalization Formula 2026 — Step-by-Step
RRB Group D CBT is conducted in multiple shifts therefore raw marks are not directly comparable – they are converted into normalised marks through an official percentile based interpolation method. Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Percentile Score – RRB calculates for each candidate: Percentile Score = (Candidates scoring <= your raw marks in your shift ÷ Total candidates in your shift) × 100
Step 2: Base Shift Selection – RRB selects one “Base Shift” – the shift with highest average (mean) marks, with a condition that the attendance of the selected shift should be at least 70% of the average attendance of all the shifts. If two shifts are tied on mean marks, the shift with the highest individual score is selected; if still tied, the shift with the highest attendance is used.
Step 3: Convert Percentile to Normalised Marks- In case your percentile score matches a percentile that is available in the Base Shift, then that Base Shift mark is automatically your normalised mark. Otherwise, RRB interpolates using one of the two formulas
Formula A (your percentile is ≥ the minimum percentile in the Base Shift):
N = Y1 + (Y2 – Y1) / (X2 – X1) × (X − X1)
Formula B (your percentile < minimum percentile in Base Shift)
N = Y1 – ( Y2 – Y1 ) / ( X2 – X1 ) x (X-X1)X1)] × (X1 − X)
Where X = your percentile score, X1/X2 = the two nearest percentile values in the Base Shift, and Y1/Y2 = the corresponding raw marks in the Base Shift at those percentiles.
| Value | Example |
| Your raw marks (Shift 3) | 62 |
| Your percentile in Shift 3 | 78.5 |
| Nearest percentiles in Base Shift (X1, X2) | 78 and 79 |
| Corresponding Base Shift marks (Y1, Y2) | 65 and 66 |
| Normalized mark (Formula A) | 65 + [(66−65)/(79−78)] × (78.5−78) = 65.5 |
