The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) has released an official notification for the recruitment of 6574 Group 4 vacancies for various posts under the Combined Civil Services Examination-IV (Group IV Services). This year, TNPSC has announced 6574 vacancies for Village Administrative Officer (VAO), Junior Assistant, Bill Collector, Typist, Steno Typist, Tax Collector, and other posts.  The online application process has started, and eligible candidates can submit their applications on or before 5 November 2026. 

The TNPSC Group 4 Exam, also known as the TNPSC Combined Civil Service Examination Group 4, is a state-level competitive exam conducted every year by the Tamil Nadu Public Services Commission (TNPSC) to recruit eligible candidates for various Group 4 posts.

TNPSC Group 4 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates planning to apply for the TNPSC Group 4 exam must meet the age limits, educational qualifications, physical standards, and language proficiency for various posts. Check the complete details below.

TNPSC Group 4 Age Limit

The age limit is calculated as of 1 July 2026. The minimum and maximum age differ according to the post and category.

For several posts, candidates belonging to the general/other category have a minimum age of 18 years, while VAO requires candidates to have completed 21 years. For Forest Watcher and Forest Guard with Driving Licence, the minimum age is also 21 years.

Candidates should check the post-wise age table in the official notification because maximum age limits and concessions vary by post and category.

No Maximum Age Limit Posts

For certain posts/categories, TNPSC specifies no maximum age limit, subject to the condition that the candidate should not have completed 60 years as on 1 July 2026 or at the time of selection/appointment.

For reserved-category candidates possessing a general educational qualification higher than the minimum qualification, the notification also provides special provisions regarding the maximum age limit.

Educational Qualification

The educational qualification depends on the post.

For several posts such as VAO, Junior Assistant and Bill Collector, the minimum general educational qualification/SSLC qualification is prescribed. Some posts require graduation, B.Com., technical qualifications, typewriting, shorthand, computer office automation or other specialised qualifications.

Important Qualification Requirements

  • VAO: Minimum General Educational Qualification.
  • Several Junior Assistant/related posts: SSLC or minimum general educational qualification.
  • Some Junior Assistant posts: Degree qualification.
  • Junior Assistant (Accounts): B.Com. degree.
  • Typist posts: SSLC/minimum qualification along with prescribed Typewriting qualification.
  • Steno Typist posts: Prescribed educational qualification along with Typewriting and Shorthand qualifications.
  • Forest Watcher: Minimum General Educational Qualification.
  • Forest Guard with Driving Licence: Higher Secondary qualification with specified science subjects, valid driving licence, driving experience, automobile knowledge and first-aid qualification.

Candidates must possess the prescribed qualification on the date of notification.

Knowledge of Tamil

Candidates must possess adequate knowledge of Tamil on the date of notification. The notification considers candidates eligible if they have studied Tamil as a language or studied through Tamil medium in the prescribed manner or have passed the Second Class Language Test in Tamil conducted by TNPSC.

Candidates may be required to upload relevant SSLC, HSC, degree/PG mark sheets or proof of passing the prescribed Tamil language test.

Computer Qualification 

The applicants applying for TNPSC Group 4 Typist & Steno-typist posts should have passed the “Certificate Course in Computer on Office Automation” awarded by the Technical Education Department to be eligible to apply for TNPSC Group 4 Recruitment 2026.

Physical standards are particularly important for candidates applying for Forest Watcher and Forest Guard with a driving licence.

TNPSC Group 4 Application Fee 2026

  1. There is a one-time registration fee of Rs. 150/- (valid for 5 years). Candidates who are already registered are not required to register again.
  2. There is an Examination Fee of Rs. 100/-, which is for the TNPSC Group 4 exam only.
    Note- The fee is payable by online mode through Net Banking / Credit Card / Debit Card on or before the last date of submission of the online application.
  3. Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Caste (Arunthathiyars)/Scheduled Tribes/Persons with Benchmark Disability/Destitute Widows are exempted from the TNPSC Group 4 Examination Fee.
  4. Most Backward Classes/Denotified Communities/Backwards Classes (Other than Muslim)/ Backward Classes (Muslim) have 3 free chances, while Ex-Servicemen have 2 free chances.

Steps to Apply for TNPSC Group 4 2026

  1. Visit the official TNPSC application portal.
  2. Complete One Time Registration (OTR), if not already registered.
  3. Log in using the registered credentials.
  4. Select the Group 4/Combined Civil Services Examination-IV application.
  5. Enter personal and educational details.
  6. Select the eligible post(s) as applicable.
  7. Upload the required documents.
  8. Pay the applicable examination fee.
  9. Preview the complete application carefully.
  10. Submit the application form.
  11. Save and download the final submitted application for future reference.

TNPSC Group 4 Selection Process 2026

The TNPSC Group 4 examination is a single-stage written examination. The ranking list is prepared based on the marks secured in the written examination.

After the written examination, candidates are shortlisted for subsequent stages such as onscreen certificate verification, physical certificate verification and counselling, depending on the post.

For VAO, Junior Assistant, Typist and Steno Typist posts, candidates are shortlisted for onscreen certificate verification in the prescribed ratios. For Forest Guard with Driving Licence and Forest Watcher posts, a separate ratio is prescribed.

For forest-related posts, candidates may also have to qualify in the prescribed physical standards/endurance-related requirements.

TNPSC Group 4 Exam Pattern 2026

The TNPSC Group 4 written examination consists of one paper with three parts. The paper contains 200 questions for 300 marks and is conducted for 3 hours.

The examination is conducted through OMR objective mode. Candidates must secure at least 40% (60 marks) in Part A for Parts B and C to be evaluated. The marks secured in all three parts are considered for ranking.

Note- Part B will be evaluated only if the candidate secures minimum qualifying marks of 40% (i.e., 60 Marks) in Part A.

TNPSC Group 4 Ranking and Tie-Breaking Rules

The merit/ranking list is prepared based on the total marks obtained in the written examination.

  • If two or more candidates secure equal marks:
  • The candidate with the higher qualification gets preference.
  • For Typist and Steno Typist posts, higher technical qualification is considered.
  • After technical qualification, higher educational qualification is considered.
  • If marks and qualification are also equal, the candidate senior in age is placed higher.
  • If age is also the same, the candidate who submitted the application earlier, based on the application number, gets preference.
