About IBPS Law Officer Exam

The IBPS Law Officer exam is a national-level competitive examination conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). Through the exam, candidates are selected for Scale-I Officer posts across participating public sector banks in India. The responsibility of a Law Officer is to provide legal opinions, draft contracts, and ensure compliance with financial and banking regulations. The starting basic pay is Rs. 48,480/-.

IBPS Law Officer 2026 Exam Date Out

As per the annual IBPS Exam Calendar 2026, the IBPS  Law Officer exam will be conducted in 2 stages (preliminary and mains). The prelims exam will be held on 29th August 2026, and the mains on 1st November 2026. Further details regarding the exam will be released with the admit card.

 Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) has announced a total of 105 vacancies for Law Officer posts in 11 participating public sector banks across India. 

Who is eligible for the IBPS Law Officer Exam?

Only those candidates who are in age between 20 and 30 years old and have completed a graduation in Law (Enrolled with the Bar Council) are eligible to apply online for the IBPS SO Exam for Law Officer posts. 

Educational Qualification (as on 21/07/2026)

• Candidates must have completed a Bachelor's Degree in Law (LLB) from a university/institution recognised by the Government of India.
• Candidates must be enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of India or a State Bar Council.
• Final-year students are not eligible; the qualifying degree must be completed and the result declared by the cut-off date mentioned in the notification
• Prior work experience as a legal practitioner is generally preferred by some banks, though it may not always be mandatory

Age Limit (as on 01/07/2026)

• Minimum Age: 20 years
• Maximum Age: 30 years

What are the IBPS SO Law Officer Selection Stages?

The selection process comprises the following stages. 

1. IBPS Law Officer Prelims Exam - This is the 1st stage of the exam, which is qualifying in nature. Only those candidates who registered for the examination will be eligible to appear for the exam.
2. IBPS Law Officer Mains Exam - Qualified candidates in the prelims exam will be shortlited for the mains exam. Conducted to evaluate professional knowledge in the exam.
3. IBPS Law Officer Interview Round -  Only Mains-qualified candidates are called for the interview (80:20). The Interview will be conducted for a total of 100 marks.
4. Final Merit List - The final merit list is based on the Mains score + Interview score combined. The candidates on the final list are eventually the ones who are recruited and get training as IBPS Law Officers.
