About TNPSC Group 1 Exam 2026

The TNPSC Group 1 (குரூப் 1)–Combined Civil Services Examination–I (Group-1 Services) is a state-level exam conducted by Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) to recuit eligible candidates for various Group 1 posts. To be recuited for Group 1 vacancies, candidates have to undergo the 3 stage of selection process i.e. Prelims-Mains-Interview. Appointed cadidates will be entitled to a monthly salary in Pay Level 12.

Changes in TNPSC Group 1 Notification 2026 

For the year 2026, TNPSC has introduced some changes in the Examination process, including the following:

  • The overall vacancies have been reduced by 44 posts, representing a 63% decrease compared to the 2025 notification.
  • Post Removals - Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Assistant Director of Rural Development, District Employment Officer
  • Post Additions -  Deputy Registrar of Co-operative Societies and District Registrar
  • Reduced Preliminary Centres: Multiple examination centres have been officially removed, which are Pollachi, Attur, Thuraiyur, Thirumangalam, Cheranmahadevi and Tindivanam

TNSPC Group 1 Exam Date 2026 Out

What is the TNPSC Group 1 2026 Eligibility Criteria?

The applicants must fulfil the TNPSC Group 1 2026 Eligibility Criteria discussed below, as per the respective posts. Check the education qualification & age limit 

Education Qualification

Applicants should possess a degree from any of the Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or any other Educational Institution established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.

Note: The applicants who have written the final-year degree examination may also apply for the Preliminary Examination for direct recruitment to the posts included in Combined Civil Services-I (Group-I Services), subject to the condition that they should produce proof of having passed the degree examination while uploading the original documents for the Main Written Examination (the last date for this activity will be announced later), failing which they will not be admitted to the Main Written Examination.

Physical Qualification

Applicants applying for the posts of Deputy Superintendent of Police (Category I) must possess the following Physical Qualifications:-

TNPSC Group 1 2026 Selection Process

The TNPSC Combined Civil Services Examination - I (Group-I Services) comprises three successive stages: Preliminary Examination (Objective Type) and  Main Examination and Interview). The final selection will be made based on the candidate's performance in the Main Examination and Interview.

  1. Stage 1: Preliminary Examination: The preliminary screening test will be conducted to shortlist eligible candidates for the main exam. The marks obtained in the prelims exam will not be considered for determining their final order of merit. candidates for the main exam.
  2. Stage 2: Mains Exam: On the basis of the minimum qualifying marks and cut-off marks, a total of 20 times the number of total vacancies will be called to appear for the mains exam. The main exam will be held for Papers 1, 2, 3, and 4. Paper I will be qualifying in nature, and marks obtained in Papers 2, 3 and 4 will be considered for the final merit list.
  3. Stage 3: Interview: Candidates declared qualified in the preliminary exam will be called to appear for the interview exam. The interview exam will be held for a total of 100 marks. The final selection of the candidates will be made based on the total marks obtained by the candidates in the Main Written Examination Paper II, III, Paper IV, and the Interview taken together.

TNPSC Group 1 2026 Exam Pattern

The selection will be made in three successive stages viz., (i) Preliminary Examination for selection of candidates for admission to the Main Written Examination (ii) Main Written Examination and (iii) an Oral Test in the shape of an Interview. The TNPSC Group 1 exam has two written papers, Prelims and Mains. Prelims consist of multiple-choice questions, whereas Mains have descriptive questions. The pattern for each exam has been discussed below. 

TNPSC Group 1 Prelims Exam Pattern

All the questions are objective, and the exam will be OMR-based. There is no negative marking for a wrong answer. The complete paper is 300 marks. Each question is worth 1.5 marks.

TNPSC Group 1 Mains Exam Pattern

Each paper has descriptive questions and the right answers are marked subjectively by the examiners. The number of questions varies in each chapter and tests the candidate’s knowledge across several domains.

The Main Written Examination answer sheets of Paper-II, Paper-III and Paper-IV will be evaluated, only if the candidate secures minimum qualifying marks [40%- i.e., 40 marks] in Paper-I and the marks secured in Paper-I will not be taken into account for ranking.
