PFRDA Grade A and SEBI Grade A are two highly sought-after regulatory sector examinations for candidates looking for a prestigious government-sector career with attractive salary, allowances, career growth and a professional work environment. While both posts are Officer Grade A (Assistant Manager) positions, the nature of work, exam syllabus, number of vacancies, streams, and sector-specific responsibilities are different.

What is PFRDA Grade A?

PFRDA Grade A is the entry-level officer position of the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority. PFRDA regulates and develops the pension sector in India and was established under the PFRDA Act, 2013.

What is SEBI Grade A?

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility varies according to the stream, so candidates should not assume that the same qualification applies to every post.

PFRDA Grade A Eligibility

For the General Stream, PFRDA's 2026 notification accepts qualifications including a Master's Degree/Post Graduate Diploma of at least two years in any discipline, or a Bachelor's Degree in Law, Engineering, and certain specified disciplines. Stream-specific qualifications are prescribed for Research, Actuary and Rajbhasha posts.

SEBI Grade A Eligibility

SEBI also prescribes separate educational qualifications according to the selected stream. Candidates applying for General, Legal, IT, Research, Official Language and Engineering streams need to satisfy the specific educational requirements mentioned in the SEBI notification.

Difficulty Level

Both examinations are considered highly competitive.

PFRDA Grade A

The biggest challenge is the limited number of vacancies. Candidates need to prepare both general aptitude areas and specialised regulatory/financial subjects.

SEBI Grade A

SEBI also has intense competition, particularly because of its reputation, salary, career prospects and association with the capital market.

Overall difficulty: Both are difficult, but the perceived difficulty depends greatly on the candidate's educational background and familiarity with the specialised syllabus.

Salary Structure

Salary is one of the strongest attractions of both regulatory examinations.

  • Investor protection
  • Market surveillance
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Research and analysis
  • Corporate and intermediary regulation
  • Policy formulation
  • Inspection and supervision
  • Legal and enforcement-related activities
  • Technology and IT-related regulatory work

If you are interested in capital markets and stock-market regulation, SEBI is the more natural choice. If you are interested in pension regulation and retirement-sector development, PFRDA is more suitable.

Work Pressure

Both are regulatory organisations and therefore offer a professional work environment. However, the nature of work can vary significantly by department and posting.

SEBI deals with a much broader and highly active securities market, so certain roles can involve substantial regulatory, analytical and time-sensitive work.

PFRDA has a narrower regulatory domain focused primarily on pensions and retirement savings, although officers may still handle important policy, regulatory and operational responsibilities.

For a comparatively niche regulatory domain, PFRDA may appeal more and for exposure to the broader financial and securities ecosystem, SEBI has an advantage.

FAQs

A finance student can target both. The final choice should depend on whether the candidate prefers pension-sector regulation (PFRDA) or securities-market regulation (SEBI).

Both are excellent regulatory-sector jobs. SEBI is preferable for candidates interested in securities and capital markets, while PFRDA is better for candidates interested in pensions and retirement-sector regulation.
