NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) is the apex development bank of India, constituted on 12th July 1982 by an Act of Parliament. It is a wholly owned undertaking of the Government of India. The headquarters is located in Mumbai with regional offices across the country. NABARD was established on the recommendation of B. Sivaraman Committee to be the top institution for credit, regulation and development in India for agriculture, rural industries and allied economic activities.

Purpose and Functions of NABARD

NABARD acts as a link between the national policy on agriculture/rural development and the ground-level banking system that finances it- making it one of the most sought-after institutions for banking and civil-service-style aspirants in India. The primary functions of NABARD include:

  1. Providing credit to rural banks, cooperative banks and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) for agriculture and rural development projects.
  2. Supervisory powers on RRBs and State/District Cooperative Banks.
  3. Financing irrigation, roads and rural infrastructure through the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF);
  4. Encouraging microfinance, Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs).
  5. To act as a knowledge and policy institution on rural credit and agricultural development for the Government of India and the Reserve Bank of India.
